Happy Accidents: A New View in the Living Room

Living Room Delbert Meier House

When we first moved in and bought this sofa for the living room, we placed it under the windows, parallel to the fireplace. At the time it seemed like the only logical placement for the sofa in this space. The rug – a hand-me-down from a friend – came along a couple years later. With the sofa placed under the window, the rug seemed too big for the room. It sat rolled up like a gigantic wool sausage in the basement for the next three years.

Well, we temporarily moved the sofa when we started stripping the wood trim and windows. Not knowing how long the window project would take, we placed the sofa perpendicular to the fireplace so we could still use it … and suddenly it all made sense. The rug came up from the basement and bingo! the whole room suddenly came together. Moving the sofa and adding the rug not only changed the room, it has opened up our view through the gorgeous zinc glass windows. You gotta love happy accidents, right?

Here’s a quick peek of the room before we moved the sofa. Note how the tone of the room has shifted with the new/old rug.

Also, wow! The room looks SO DIFFERENT now that we’ve stripped the trim!

Perfectly Imperfect: Our $29 Dining Room Table

022714-table01

I’ve been looking for a dining room table for a couple of months now but have always bulked at prices. This is our first dining room in many years and, knowing that we’ll frequently entertain in the Dream House, I want a rectangular table to will seat six. I fell in love with a couple of tables from West Elm but I couldn’t justify spending upwards of $600 on a table right now. So imagine my delight when I came across a rustic old table for $29 at the antique mall!

The Cabinet That Used to Be a Clock (We Think)

013114-cabinet-05

One of the best things about furnishing the Dream House with secondhand goods is coming across things like this cabinet. We were browsing around an antique mall in a nearby town and came across the old wood cabinet with glass door. The little tag on it said something simple like homemade cabinet. How charming, right?

We Found Our Affordable American-Made Sofa!
WELCOME TO THE DREAM HOUSE, ENGLAND SOFA

012614sofa2

One of my first posts here on the blog was about our search for an American-made sofa for the Dream House. We’re trying to decorate the house with mostly secondhand goods, but we decided to splurge on a brand new sofa (and mattresses, too).  After toying with spending way more than our budget would allow, I stumbled upon a sofa in a local furniture store one weekend day. The sofa was not only in our price range (under budget even!), it was made in the United States. Sold!
