i, since 1997 I have owned the O. J. Hager House in Waukon, Iowa, and was wondering if the two of you might like to visit some afternoon here and have dinner? It is a Robert C. Spencer, Jr. home build in 1907-1908. Spencer wrote some of the first admiring reviews of Frank Lloyd Wright. Thinking it might be fun to meet you, and that you might know good restorationists for a few remaining projects? Great article in the Driftless! Mary Jane White

I was wondering why this house is not on the National Register. It is not even in the Iowa architecture inventory database. Is it ineligible for the NRHP due to the modifications? If it was on the NRHP, you could apply for grants for work returning it to its original state.

The short answer is that we have not yet applied for National Register certification. The longer answer is that we have looked into it and discovered that it is a cumbersome process. We have instead invested our time in publishing the book and keeping up with the house improvements. That’s not to say that we won’t apply in the future though!

    Jason,

Jason, I recently purchased 3 art glass leaded windows thought to come out of American System Built homes since taken down in the Burnham Block. What research materials do you suggest I access to have a look at the art glass windows originally in those homes? I like the windows, and they certainly are of the style of FLW, no matter if they are from those homes or not, but am interested in following the thread to a conclusion if possible. Thoughts? Thanks.

You may want to check the archives at the Avery Library. They have all of the drawings pertaining to the American System-Built Homes.
