Welcome Home: Steel Magnolias at the Thrift Store

02/17/2014

steel-magnoliasThere’s a thrift store in a nearby town that I visit at least once a week. It’s not the best thrift store – they don’t have any furniture and their hours are kind of limited – but I’ve found a few gems here, including our glassware and Michael Graves phone.

On one of my very first visits to the store, Steel Magnolia was playing on the televisions. Now, if you don’t this late 80’s cinematic gem, you’re missing out. With an all star cast of leading ladies, including Julia Roberts, Dolly Parton, Sally Field and Shirley MacLaine, I immediately fell in love with this tear jerker the first time I saw it as a teenage boy.

Later, as a lonely college student in my first apartment, I literally wore out my VHS copy of the movie. I think I actually broke down in tears on the afternoon the VCR at my tape.

Fast forward 20 years to the day I walked into the thrift store and saw the film screening on the bulky old televisions. It felt like a welcoming hug from my new hometown.

“Drink your juice, Shelby,” I muttered to myself and giggled.

“Welcome home, Mr. and Mr. Blandings,” the movie seemed to say in return.

Make Homemade Fire Starters with 2 Things You’re Already Putting in the Garbage

01/30/2014

fire-starter-01

What do you use to start a fire? Those store-bought fire starting logs? Well, hello, Mr. and Mrs. Moneybags! Crumpled up newspaper? Yep, that’ll work (and will perhaps keep print media running). Top secret documents that you need to destroy? Um, yeah, that’ll work too (although I worry about the kinds of people you associate with). Have I got a better fire starter for you! And it’s two things you would throw into the garbage anyway!

How We Work With What We Have:
Our Makeshift Life at the Dream House

01/29/2014

This fireplace is a perfect example of how Mr. and Mr. Blandings make the best of what we have. We haven’t been able to get the fireplace inspected due to all the snow and cold so we’re not able to build a proper fire yet. Still, that dark boxy hole in the wall is just begging for some flames! Thank goodness for cheap IKEA candles and a cordless drill.

Sub-Zero Sightseeing: Life Outside the Dream House

01/24/2014

winter-day03

We’re so enamored by the house that we rarely want to leave it. It’s a lot like when you’re in a new relationship. In the beginning, you want to spend all your time staring longingly into each other’s eyes, holding hands and whispering “I love yous”. You never want to leave your new paramour’s side, lest you miss a moment of his or her beauty.

The Totally Free, All-Natural DIY Window Covering

01/23/2014

012314-window-film-01I’ve been struggling a bit with how to cover the windows in the Dream House. Because the windows are so beautiful and since they’re such an integral part of the house’s design, I want to keep them as exposed as possible. However, we also want some privacy. Here in the entryway, for instance, there’s a window by the front door that faces the street. I love the light but I don’t like feeling like my house is wide open for all to see. I came up with a solution that honors the window, still allows in plenty of light and gives us privacy. Oh, and I did it all for free.
