When You Have to Start Somewhere Start Small

07/03/2014

Stripping Woodwork | This American HouseWe’re officially diving into the huge task of stripping woodwork in the house. My approach to big tasks is to start with a small portion and then work my way to the big stuff. It’s partially for that reason that we’re stripping the woodwork in the bathroom first. Being the smallest room in the house, it’s like dipping our toe in the water before we really plunge in. We’re also starting in this room because we’re working up way up to a full renovation of the bathroom in the coming months. Woodwork first, then flooring, then sink and toilet, etc.

Wish us luck!

In the Event of a Water Emergency, Please Have a
Shop Vac and Dehumidifier on Hand

How a Dehumidifier and Shop Vac Became Our New Favorite Things

Judging by the amount of rain we’ve had lately, we should have bought an ark instead of a house. Over the past few weeks, it has rained more days that not. Some of the storms that have passed through have been quite powerful, with torrential downpours coming in waves. While this has been great for the grass seed we sprinkled in front of the house, it hasn’t been very good for the basement.

Postcard from the Past: 100 Years of Monona, Iowa

06/30/2014

Monona, Iowa - 1914 and 2014

The Mister picked up this postcard depicting our little town on Ebay a few weeks ago. It wasn’t until it had arrived and we were taking a closer look at the postcard that we took note of the postdate. June 30, 1914. In case you’re not keeping track of your calendar, that’s 100 years ago. Exactly one hundred years ago today even! What a perfect time to take a look at the city now vs. then.

The Great Outdoors: From Polar Vortex to Summer Sundays

06/29/2014

When we closed on the house back in November 2013, the first snow had already fallen on the Dream House. By January 2014, when the above video was shot, the polar vortex had settled on the Midwest and the snow with it. I shot this video one snowy morning after The Mister had gone back to the city. I was feeling as blue and lonely as the weather would suggest.

Considering the harsh winter that we survived, you’ll have to figure us if we’re a little giddy about summer. For only now can we truly enjoy what’s outside the house. While it was great excuse to focus on interior projects over the winter, it’s positively dreamy being able to shift our attention to the outdoors.

For months we would stand at the window and look out over a blanket of ice and snow. We would have spirited conversations about what might lie beneath all that snow. We dreamed about how the big bare trees would look once their leaves had grown back in. We planned our garden and guessed about tree species while we counted down the days until summer.

Here it is, late June, and we have been relishing every moment of the season. The big leafy trees rustle in the wind and sound like ocean waves. The green grass provides a lush carpeting across the ample lawn. I’ve even become one of those guys who enjoys mowing!

Viva summer!
