In shopping for secondhand furniture and accessories for the Dream House, I’ve come across a lot of kitschy old vintage drinking glasses. Nearly every thrift store and resale shop has a few shelves stocked with 50 cent glasses. I started picking up mismatched glassware and, as my collection has grown, I’ve found quite a few ways to use the glasses that don’t involve drinking.
Although the dining room is in no way finished – we still need dining chairs, a sideboard or buffet, new window treatments and some other finishing touches – it has definitely seen a lot of improvement over the past couple of months. Here’s a peek at how the room has come together so far…
In anticipation of our weekend house guests, I spent some time last week trying to finish off rooms. In the master bedroom, there was a metal crate resting between the two vintage twin beds as a sort of makeshift bedside table (as you can see in this progress post). Since our guests would be using this room I thought it would be nice to replace the crate with an actual table. After scouring every inch of the antique mall I found the perfect little painted table … and it was only $10!
The best thing about hosting house guests while your house is still a work in progress is the chance it gives you to clean up projects and add some finishing touches. The house is still rather sparsely furnished and it’s definitely still going through a style evolution, but it’s nice start hanging art and introduce accessories. I wanted to bring some life to the house so I went out for flowers the morning before the guests arrived. Instead of flowers, however, I opted for a few cheap house plants. The plants were not only cheaper but they’ll last longer too!
I’ve been looking for a dining room table for a couple of months now but have always bulked at prices. This is our first dining room in many years and, knowing that we’ll frequently entertain in the Dream House, I want a rectangular table to will seat six. I fell in love with a couple of tables from West Elm but I couldn’t justify spending upwards of $600 on a table right now. So imagine my delight when I came across a rustic old table for $29 at the antique mall!
