I’ve been back in the city for a few days, trying to make the most of what a major metropolitan area has to offer. I’ve had food delivered, used public transit and bought some specialty foods. But one thing tops all of that. One thing is even better than some random dude dropping off Thai food at my front door. I used Craigslist to list and sell something I no longer wanted.
Ah, the joys of shopping at Goodwill. One day back in April I came across five unopened packages of white queen size sheets. Each package had been dated – in old lady handwriting, no less! – starting in 1973 and ending in 1980. These poor sheets have been suffocating inside their plastic wrapping all those years. Don’t worry, 40-year-old virgin sheets. I’ll find a use for you!
Our collection of secondhand ceramics continues to grow. Every time I’m in a Goodwill store I seem to find at least one or two handmade pieces to add to the collection. Most recently at a Goodwill in Fitchburg, Wisconsin, I bought a collection of orange bowls and cups made by a lady named Joanne.
In anticipation of our weekend house guests, I spent some time last week trying to finish off rooms. In the master bedroom, there was a metal crate resting between the two vintage twin beds as a sort of makeshift bedside table (as you can see in this progress post). Since our guests would be using this room I thought it would be nice to replace the crate with an actual table. After scouring every inch of the antique mall I found the perfect little painted table … and it was only $10!
There’s a big new Goodwill store that’s about halfway between the city apartment and the Dream House. No matter which direction I’m going, whether to or fro, I make a point of stopping at this particular Goodwill. It’s a big store, nice and clean in its newness, and I usually find at least one interesting thing. On yesterday’s visit that interesting thing was this answer canister.
