Bedroom Tour: Edgar & Larry’s Two Twins in a Guest Room

Edgar and Larry's Guest Bedroom on Mr. and Mr. Blandings

Our friends Edgar and Larry are an absolute inspiration. I first met the couple when I photographed their old apartment for Apartment Therapy back in 2011. I was amazed by the way they made great use of their 900 square foot space. Now in a much larger home, Edgar and Larry are still amazing me with their design sensibility. Today, Edgar is giving us a tour of the guest room. (Rumor has it their twin beds may have inspired the twin beds in the guest room of the Dream House.)

Although he’s happy in his job in the intermodal transportation industry, Edgar is quick to admit that his dream job would involve interior design. Walking through the house he shares with his partner, Larry, it’s clear that the couple have put a lot of thought into the details of their home. The master bedroom is currently undergoing a transformation, and thus not quite ready for a tour, but Edgar gave us a peek into one of two guest bedrooms in his house.

This modestly sized guest bedroom is a perfect example of how to make the best use of a small space. Whereas a full or queen size bed might make the room feel cramped and crowded, the matching twins are perfectly proportioned. And to give an illusion of more space, Edgar positioned a large mirror between the closet door and the bedroom door. Keeping the window treatment simple and light also lends to the room’s airiness.

Having two twin beds in the guest bedroom also makes it easier to host multiple guests who may not be comfortable sharing the same bed. An antique end table provides a night stand for both beds and the built-in bookshelves are perfect for displaying some of Edgar’s beloved pottery collection.

Name: Edgar Ramirez Franco
City: Chicago
Bedroom size: Approximately 9’ X 11’

How would you describe your décor style? Well, the style of our home is New England Cape Cod. We bought the house because N.E.C.C. is our favorite style. So we decided that we would decorate the rooms in our home to feel light by using light breezy colors and small-scaled furniture to make the rooms look bigger.

How do you use this bedroom? This is one of two guest bedrooms we have. We strictly use it for friends and family members who want to dwell in our home for a few days. The bedroom has one closet and we keep it empty for our guests to use when they stay with us.

What’s the most prized possession in your bedroom? I would have to say my collection of vintage pottery. I have been collecting earth tone pottery for a few years and I have that style of pottery all through the house.

Do you make your bed in the morning? Yes, I must! I hate feeling wrinkles or loose fitted sheets on my skin, so my bed must be made daily.

When was the last time you bought a new mattress? We bought a mattress four years ago. And we are currently in the market for a new mattress.

What’s your mattress preference? Firm, soft or somewhere in between? My mattress preference is firm but my partner’s preference is extra soft so when we purchase our new mattress we will be getting “somewhere in between.”

Are you a back, stomach or side sleeper? I start out by sleeping on my stomach and wake up on my side.

Thanks for the tour, Edgar. We look forward to showing off the rest of the house when it’s ready!
