Fresh Air! Our First Use of the Clothesline

04/03/2014

Hudson Bay wool blankets hanging on the clothesline
Nothing says spring quite like winter blankets hanging on the clothesline. I’ve been excited to use the clothesline since we first looked at the Dream House back in September. But then winter took over and mounds of snow covered the backyard. Now that the temperature has climbed into the 40’s and all the snow has melted, I’m finally able to get out there and hang these old wool blankets out for some fresh air. I look forward to brightening our white bedding under the summer sunshine and saving energy by hanging our clothes out to dry.

Ode to Cow: A Poem by Mr. and Mr. Blandings

04/03/2014

Ode to Cow

Ode to Cow

Oh cow, you give us such delicious treats
Cheeses and milk and lots of meats
But there’s one thing about you of which I must grouse
When an ill wind blows off the fields toward my house
it carries the fragrance of – well, cows.
Get used to it, I shall in time,
but oh, dear cow, please heed my rhyme
And blow your stink another way
So I can go out to frolic and play
And think well of you when I eat you today.

Mr. and Mr. Blandings into the Wild Blue Yonder

04/02/2014

Landing at Chicago's Ohare AirportProjects at the Dream House have been on pause as we’ve doing a bit of traveling. While I was fairly successful with keeping the blog updated while we were away, I lost all day yesterday to travel. The day involved a mid-day flight plus a five hour drive that turned into six. By the time we got to the Dream House last night, we were delirious with the joy of coming home. So delirious that I may have insisted that we try to rip the mantle off the fireplace at midnight. Yeah, we didn’t get very far with that before we gave up and opened a bottle of whiskey.

Today, we’re back into the thick of projects. That mantle IS coming down! And the new blinds for the dining room arrived while we were away. I can’t wait to see them installed on the windows! Perhaps the most exciting but laborious project of all, though, is finally cleaning up the yard. The rest of the snow melted over the past week so it’s time to rake the leaves that have been smothering the grass since fall.

Traveling is great, but it’s always a treat to come home. So you’ll have to excuse this break in blog posts while we get back to projects. Perhaps tomorrow I’ll be able to share a successful story about removing the mantle!

A Look at Our American System-Built Home’s Blueprint

03/31/2014

American System-Built Home blue print

One of the exciting extras that came with the Dream House was the original blueprint. The framed blueprint has been hanging on a wall near the front door when we first viewed the house and we (quite wisely, I think) stipulated that it had to stay with the house as a condition of the sale. I mean, if you’re going to buy a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home, you sure as hell want the blueprint for it! We recently decided to have the blueprint re-framed, affording us the opportunity to photograph it while it was out from under the glass.
